Context

ThoughtGPS is an audio-route platform where creators record short clips and stitch them into location-based routes that listeners follow. I joined the User Onboarding team an intern on the Creator app, working remotely alongside the UI/UX teams. My brief: figure out where new creators were getting stuck and turn the research into changes we could actually build.

The problem

Creators were signing up, then getting stuck. Going from downloading the app to creating a first clip, and from a first clip to building a full route, required a lot of unfamiliar work upfront. Through testing and feedback, we found that new creators often weren't sure what to do next or whether they were making progress.

The live Creator app I tested and gave feedback on. Recording worked, but it wasn’t always clear what to do next. The Tours list was empty, and the map looked the same whether you had one clip or fifty.

Research

My team and I ran user interviews and usability tests with creators, paying attention to where they hesitated, what confused them, and what they expected to happen next. I helped identify and organize these friction points, then worked with the team to turn our findings into a prioritized set of product improvements.

I also tested the ThoughtGPS Creator app myself, submitted detailed product feedback, and completed several creator focused assignments. I created an AI character and creator profile and built five location based audio tours, which gave me a better understanding of the product from the creator's perspective.

Rather than creating a wishlist of features, we compared ideas based on their potential impact and how difficult they would be to implement.

Deliberately deferred

Leaderboards. Competitive ranking could discourage the new creators we were trying to get started, so we chose to focus on progress and achievement instead.

The solution

We explored a gamification and rewards layer centered around the two moments where creators were most likely to drop off: creating their first clip and completing their first route.

Badges recognize these milestones right away, while creator levels and a points system give creators a longer term sense of progress. Streaks and trophies encourage creators to keep coming back after their first successful actions.

I also mapped where these rewards could appear throughout the experience, including onboarding, the creator dashboard, route completion, profiles, the map, notifications, and the weekly recap. This helped us think about gamification as part of the existing workflow rather than something added on top of it.

Redesigning Near Me

Near Me is where creators can see whether their work is reaching people, so it was one of the screens we focused on most with the UI/UX team. In the live app, every clip had the same pin, the list didn’t make it clear how close a clip was or who created it, and there wasn’t a way to filter what you were seeing. We focused on making the map easier to understand before adding anything new.

A pin language

The main goal was to make the map easier to understand at a glance. We gave each type of pin its own color and center so creators could tell their drafts from published work, while listeners could tell the difference between a friend’s clip, a featured clip, and a premium clip without opening each one.

We tested a few different ways to use color, including the outer pin, inner dot, and list row. We ended up using a colored pin with a neutral center because it was easiest to read on the map in both light and dark mode.

Outcomes

The work came together as a prioritized product brief that the team could use to guide future improvements. We also defined the metrics that would help evaluate the experience, including signup to first clip conversion, signup to first route conversion, clips and routes per creator, weekly active users, 7 day retention, route completion, and referrals.

More importantly, the project gave me experience working with a live mobile product and seeing how user research, product feedback, and UI/UX decisions connect. I learned how to take something a user struggles with and turn it into a product decision the team can act on.

Context

Sakura was built in a two-day designathon. I worked as a UX/UI designer across research and interface. With only two days, we had to make decisions quickly, back them up with evidence, and narrow everything down to one direction and one prototype.

The problem

How might we help brand-loyal, low-income women look past pretty packaging to find high-quality, fair-priced alternatives and make informed decisions for their financial future?

Women in the U.S. earn roughly 81% of what men earn, yet pay more to exist: women's personal care products cost about 13% more on average, and women's hair products can run up to 48% higher than men's. The behavioral half is harder. The Halo Effect means attractive packaging reads as higher quality, so many shoppers never look for the cheaper equivalent even when the ingredients match.

Our survey drew 160+ responses across age, income, and employment. 60% had not heard of the pink tax at all. 82% spend under $150 per month on personal care, and 39% spend under $50, making a $3 to $5 saving per item a meaningful share of an essentials budget. Price was the number one purchase driver, yet 4 out of 5 interviewees still cared about packaging. 67% only trust a product when friends or reviews vouch for it. And 95% said yes to a tool that surfaced cheaper alternatives.

Process

We mapped how our user shops today, ran a competitive analysis, and found the gap: existing tools find the cheapest version of the same product. None of them expose the gender-based price difference or offer a genuinely comparable alternative.

We also considered a browser extension and an AR try-in-store concept. The extension only helps online, but ~70% of respondents shop both online and in person; AR doesn't support the planning-ahead behaviour people described. 67% told us they'd want a mobile app — so that's what we built.

The solution

Sakura helps users both before they shop and while they’re standing in the aisle. Users search, scan, or upload a photo of a product; Sakura returns the best alternatives with a % match, then explains why it matches on ingredients, performance and feel, alongside reviews from other women. Swapping an item logs the saving and grows a sakura tree on your phone's homepage, so a habit change has something to show for it.

Outcomes & reflection

In just two days, we turned our research into an interactive Figma prototype. By helping users look beyond brand familiarity and compare products based on what actually matters to them, Sakura makes it easier to find affordable alternatives without feeling like they are sacrificing quality. Our research showed strong demand, with 95.4% of low income shoppers saying they would use a tool like Sakura. By combining price comparisons with product details and reviews from other women, Sakura makes finding cheaper alternatives feel less like a compromise and more like a confident choice.

Redesigning how San Diego Coastkeeper teaches beachgoers and advocates about local water quality

Context

San Diego Coastkeeper is an environmental nonprofit protecting the waterways of San Diego County. Through DesignCo at UC San Diego, our team partnered with them to redesign their educational page so that complex environmental reporting became engaging, accessible and easy to act on. 

The problem

How might we create a website experience that allows both casual beachgoers and environmental advocates to easily access, understand, and act on coastal water information?
Educational content was scattered across different pages, written for people who already understood the science. We were trying to serve two very different audiences, from curious beachgoers to committed advocates, with the same experience. In the end, neither was easily finding the information or actions they needed.

Research

I was the UX research lead, working alongside my coworker. We wrote and ran the survey on how people navigate the current site, conducted the interviews, and synthesized everything into insights the team could use to guide our redesign. Then, we built the personas and ran a competitive analysis of comparable environmental nonprofits. Four questions guided it: how easily can users find key information today, how do they prefer to see environmental data, what makes information hard to understand, and what would improve the experience overall.

Key insights

  • Both personas struggle when reading through the dense text and technical explanations of the science.
  • Visuals are crucial. Interactive maps, charts, icons and ratings are how people understand data.
  • Users want quick access to information they can trust, and expect the important things to be immediately visible.
  • Journey maps showed frustration whenever finding one fact meant clicking through several pages.
  • Educational content has to connect to an action. People want to know what to do with what they've learned.

Process

We sketched layouts and moved into low-fidelity Figma wireframes, then high fidelity. The decisions that mattered were structural. We wanted to have one main education landing page instead of scattered material, four card sections collapsed into three scrollable ones, a section preview before anyone clicks, "Issues" renamed to the "Learn", and downloadable curriculum merged with videos into "Courses" grouped by topic.

Outcomes

We A/B tested the redesigned prototype against the live site with 15 participants, alternating order to reduce bias and using identical tasks for navigation, resource discovery and content selection.

Discoverability rose about 20% in testing, and the deliverables of simplified navigation and a site migration plan went to the Coastkeeper team to implement. However, it is important to note limitations. 15 participants is directional, not conclusive, and we tested a prototype rather than a live build.

What's next & what I learned

The A/B results helped us decide what to improve next: adding more variety to the article images, making “View all” easier to notice, and adding a search bar across the education page. This project also showed me how much research can help keep a six person team aligned, and how important it is to turn research findings into decisions that developers can actually build.
